Senior Workforce Development Project Manager

Laurie Mays has served as the Senior Workforce Development Project Manager (WFDPM) at the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce Foundation for six years. Her career path, she admits, has been anything but linear, though her passion for agriculture traces back to a childhood love of horses. This interest led her to pursue an animal-focused education, earning a degree in Animal Science: Equine Business from Clemson University, followed by studies in Agriculture and Environmental Science at West Texas A&M University.

With her diverse background, Laurie has worn many hats throughout her career, from Director of Educational Programs at the Kentucky Horse Park to high school agriculture teacher. Her eclectic collection or roles have allowed her to develop skills and gain experiences that have equipped her to excel in her current position.

As Senior WFDPM, Laurie oversees significant initiatives. "I work collaboratively across various industries in Kentucky to close the skilled workforce gap. This is done by engaging employers, educators, and other stakeholders to build and strengthen talent pipelines. Every day is different, and I enjoy working with diverse groups to support agriculture businesses throughout the state," she explains.

When asked what advice she would offer to aspiring agriculturalists, Laurie emphasizes the importance of early engagement in the industry: "It's crucial to explore different parts of the field as soon as possible. Take every opportunity to land internships, co-ops, or other work-based learning experiences to discover what you like—and don't like—about various careers."
